Meet Sassa Lynne on Etsy.com

What is the name of your Etsy shop and link? Sassa Lynne is the name of my shop. It’s actually the name of my range of hand-dyed bits and pieces! You can find my shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/sassalynne?ref=si_shop

How has your experience been on Etsy? Etsy has been very good to me! Not only have I met some lovely customers, I’ve met lots and lots of lovely supportive sellers. The community is amazing.

What has been your most exciting moment as an artist here on Etsy? I can’t say that there has only been one exciting moment on Etsy! Each sale is as exciting as the first, but maybe that from a returning customer has a slight edge. However, if I’m honest, unexpectedly winning the treasury challenge is pretty high on the list.

Do you have any advice for new Etsy shop owners? Oh yes! Join a team! Once you have chosen your team it’s essential to become an active member. The advice and support you receive is perfect to help your business grow and turn your Etsy experience into an exciting and freindly one.

Tell us how you got started dyeing yarn. What drew you to this line of work?
I’ve been dyeing threads and yarns for over 20 years. At first it was in a very small way so that I could use them in embroideries of my own. Gradually more and more people asked if they could buy them, so I expanded my range of colours and fibers – and suddenly I was a ‘shop’. I love mixing dyes to produce unexpected colour combinations, and over the years I have developed techniques that are unique. I teach dyeing, but I don’t teach these 😉 What is an average day like in the dye studio? I often dye outside. I have pots, tubs and bags available, and gradually during the day they are filled with fabrics, yarns, fibers and threads. The dye is applied carefully, and I make copious notes. The weather here in the UK has been very unreliable, so sometimes it has created very unexpected results – and that is so exciting! I use a variety of dyes on my production line (doesn’t that sound grand – it’s about 2 feet long…..) both synthetic and natural, and sometimes combine both together. I try to be as ecological as possible, and use the very last ounce of colour.

Tell us more how you choose your fibers and yarn bases, and what the average knitter can expect when working with them:
I work in textiles and teach a wide variety of techniques. I choose to dye items that I can use in some first and foremost. Although I don’t find time to knit I do use knitting yarns, so these find their way into the shop from time to time. I dye yarns that range from banana fibres through cotton to viscose, and, of course, wool. The also dye the raw fibres, viscose, wool and silk, although I don’t often offer these on Etsy. Hand stitching threads are the most popular, and the range of fine perle that are currently listed are used by quilters and crazy quilters too.

How did you select the fiber content of your bases? Is there any correlation between the content of the bases and how they are named?
I buy my yarns from a very small selection of suppliers. I am fussy about the quality, and would never resort to saving money on supplies just for the sake of it. These suppliers often don’t have large stocks of yarns etc, so I buy what they can currently supply.

What are your favorite projects to make with your items?
My favourite techniques include using the Embellisher Machine, Creative Free Machine Embroidery and hand stitching. The embellisher machine is an adaptation of an industrial needle-felting machine. I have had one since they were introduced to the UK and I love it! I can use all sorts of fabrics, fibers and yarns to create quite complex backgrounds and then further embellish with hand and machine embroidery. My fine perle can also be used in a large-eyed sewing machine needle, so I can combine all my favourite techniques and supplies in each piece.

How did you decide to go into this business? What’s the best part?… and the most challenging? As I mentioned above, it almost began by accident! It became more serious when my father died and my mother was able to lend a hand with winding yarns and threads for me. When she was no longer able to do that my husband was able to step in and help. He has been a tremendous support and colleague. We have been married for many years and he is still as tolerant as he has always been, in spite of the house being overrun with dyes and yarns!

List some patterns you think your Yarns would be perfect for:
The knitting yarns are perfect as additional feature yarns. They range in weight from quite fine to chunky. Usually one skein will make a scarf, and there are some of these for sale on Etsy by various sellers who have been good enough to buy from me. If you are a hand quilter, you will love the fine perle. It is a very special thread.

The stage is yours! Is there anything you’d like to add?
Team Elite is a lovely team. I’d like to say a big thanks to all that supported me during my recent period of ill health which also included a hospital stay. I’m looking forward to repaying you all by supporting the team in the future. Thanks again for voting for me in the recent challenge.

Thank you Sassa Lynne, I really enjoyed this interview and browsing all the wonderful items in your Etsy shop!

Our Thursday Treasury Challenge winner is:

Our Thursday Treasury Challenge Winner is no stranger to creating fabulous collections for Team Elite!  Betty from  AlegriaCollection.

In our last interview with Betty after winning a previous challenge, we learned why Betty is inspired by vintage and about her shop.  This week I wanted to find out how Betty goes about curating her winning collections and what inspires her!

Tell us how you came to love curating treasuries:
When I first joined Etsy I was fascinated by treasuries, but they were a mystery to me—how to be featured on one, how to create one, how exactly did it all work? Then, my guesswork having failed, I read the instructions (what a novel idea!), but I was still “afraid.” After a few months I finally closed my eyes tight, held my nose and jumped in! My first treasury was for Mother’s Day: “Blue, Oh So Blue,” in honor of my mother whose favorite color is: blue! (www.etsy.com/treasury/MTk1Nzk0ODZ8MjcyMjc4ODczNg/blue-oh-so-blue?index=7) I was pleased with the results and received a lot of positive feedback. From then on I was hooked!

Do you pay attention to the treasuries on the front page?
I do pay attention to FP treasuries, but I find many of them a little pale and minimalistic, although I’ve seen many lovely FP treasuries. I’m a “maximalist”—more is more—and love bold colors and plenty of texture. I choose items that evoke a certain emotion and fit the theme I’m following as much as possible. I use FP treasuries to stay informed—like reading the newspaper or watching the news—but I don’t try to emulate the FP because my style is very different.

How do you choose a name for your treasury curation?
It depends. If it’s a treasury for a team challenge with a predetermined theme I try to tie the theme to a quote I love or a phrase from a poem. Sometimes I will use one of the featured items as the inspiration for the treasury’s name. For example, I curated a Team Elite treasury for the “pink and yellow” challenge and named it “Dream.” The first featured item was a yellow scrapbook page with the word “dream” on it. It just seemed to fit the overall feeling of the treasury. I’m also a writer and always have phrases running around in my head, and often I have a name before I start selecting items to include in a treasury.

What inspires you when creating treasuries?
I love to travel, I love books, flowers, rainy days, color, autumn (I curated an autumn treasury entitled “Summertime . . .” and in my comments I said, “but I love Autumn best of all.”) Current events, like Queen Elizabeth’s diamond jubilee, inspired a teapot-themed treasury. Inspiration is really everywhere for me.

What is your advice to getting views on a treasury curation?
The first thing I do after completing a treasury is convo all featured sellers and tell them they’ve been treasured. (I’m often surprised to find out one of my items has been included in a treasury but I knew nothing about it.) I also remind the featured sellers to “favorite” the treasury and ask them to share it. I’ve noticed many people leave comments but forget to favorite, which is the most important part for promotion purposes. Lately, I’ve started Tweeting and posting my treasury items on Pinterest and Wanelo. I’m not sure how much traffic that generates for those shops, but it can’t hurt! It’s time consuming but I let the sellers know that I’ve promoted one of their items; I think they appreciate it and many reciprocate. I also convo Etsy friends who aren’t featured in the treasury but are more than glad to offer support—and they do!

Do you think treasuries help sellers gain views in their shops? If so, how?
I think they do. We are all curious by nature, and if someone features one of my items in a treasury I want to see what the curator’s shop looks like, what kinds of items she carries, do I want to add her to my circle or follow her on Twitter, do I want to favorite or Tweet the shop. Even if what I see isn’t my style, I always try to return the favor by selecting a few favorites. What goes around comes around, or better yet, “you shall reap what you sow.”

What is it you look for when selecting items for your treasury curations?
Beauty, emotion, evocative colors—items that say “wow”! But—and this is really important and something I’m working on in my own shop—if I love the item but the picture isn’t good, I won’t use it. Pictures are everything, and I mean everything!

What is one piece of advice you can give new Etsians when it comes to making treasuries?
Don’t be afraid and get started! But be thoughtful about it. Whatever your theme, make sure the items complement one another somehow. Depending on the treasury’s theme or objective, the featured items can be 16 versions of the same thing (like my teapot treasury), or they can be a contrast of colors and textures, or a collection of completely diverse items that tells a story. For example, my Italian friend Cris of KrissWool, who I believe is a master curator, built a treasury around old, utilitarian items:www.etsy.com/treasury/MjA2MjM2MTh8MjcyMjkxMTY3Mg/strong-and-simple-life2…. What could have been a hodgepodge, turned out to be a visually beautiful collection that evoked earlier times, regardless of the item’s original use. And the name, “Strong and Simple,” is perfection!

Who are your top three favorite Etsy sellers and why?
It’s impossible for me to pick just three! I love so many Etsy sellers and they are all unique in their own way! I love the ones I love for the originality of their creations, for the quality of their vintage items, for the beauty of the supplies they offer. But I have to make special mention of one shop I’ve bought several things from: Ozma Of Odds: www.etsy.com/shop/ozmaofodds?page=2. I don’t know where Rosemary finds her inspiration, but not only is her shop beautiful to look at, but her inspirational offerings are exquisite—they speak to me on a very personal level. And she sounds like a lovely person to boot!

When you buy handmade, what is it you look for? (Price, Quality, Uniqueness?)
Uniqueness and quality first, price second. Although I do not have an unlimited budget, I don’t mind paying more for something someone put her heart and soul into, and which in turn touches my heart and soul.

I’ve learned that Etsy is a community and you can’t go it alone if you want to succeed. Joining a team is a great way to garner support and get noticed, but also to make friends. And some of those friendships go deeper than just “Etsy talk.” I’m experiencing that myself and nothing could be more rewarding!

Our next shop of the day is Pokeypotamus, this glass lamp-work artist creates the most adorable “PUG” sculpture and pendants! Here are some of her adorable creations:

The pug measures approximately 2.5 inches from his squished, puggy nose to his curly, little tail! A lot of time and effort go into each piece! Every pug has it’s own unique expression, personality and posture. I try to capture the character of a pug and bring it out in the form of glass by adding all the wrinkles, fat rolls, head-tilts and pouty eyes that we all know and love about our precious fur-babies.
Each pug is sculpted using a torch, colored glass rods and various hand tools. Because of this, no two sculpture are alike! Every sculpture is signed by me, dated and numbered!

Each pendant is hand sculpted with borosilicate glass and kiln annealed for added strength and durability!

I use high quality chalk pastel pencils on white sketch paper. I’ve experimented around with different types, textures and brands to find one that works for the quality of portrait I strive to create.

I hope you enjoyed these adorable creations, you can like PokeyPotamus on FaceBook:

Lordship Through Friendship is a 192-page inspirational book that can be used in a small group study or as a personal devotional.

Written in a conversational format, the book contains 25 chapters along with a chapter-by-chapter study guide. Chapters can be read in succession or randomly since each chapter has its own beginning, middle, and ending.
One of the backcover endorsements…
“[W]hile Rita’s targeted audience is Christian, her themes have wide appeal; her metaphors are fresh and clear, and her provocative prose is inspiring.” Joan W., Professor Emerita
Two of the inside reader endorsements…
“One of the things I loved most about Lordship through Friendship was how the author presented Bible verses that I grew up with in a new light. Rita Sullivan’s conversational visits with the Lord and His modern-day parables enabled me to see these verses afresh. All of us need to pause at times and reexamine our faith and beliefs. The book’s chapter–by-chapter study questions will assist you in that reflective process.” –Rosalind E.
“This book was very enlightening–a big eye opener. I found much wisdom in these pages. The book has rekindled my desire to grow spiritually closer to the Lord.” –Gayle P.

This listing is for a photo print anniversary card, which I designed and gave to my husband for our anniversary this year. Photos inserted on the card were taken by me while vacationing in North Carolina in 2005.
